This exercise is adapted from this post by Joe Edelman. He also teaches classes and workshops on values-based design, which you can find here.
- A goal is a thing you want to achieve, i.e. a “what”.
- A value is a way you want to live your life, i.e. a “how”.
He points out that it’s more important not to sacrifice your values to your goals than vice versa.
You might have overarching values for your life (see the values exercise) but you can also think of specific values associated the way you want to enact individual goals. Here are some example values from Joe Edelman:
